Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the Curricular Unit’s objectives
The syllabus covers the main topics of calculus with functions of one real variable, consistently with the curricular unit’s objectives. A particular attention is devoted to geometrical and physical applications. The developed techniques are used to equate and solve problems in a wide range of different contexts promoting the ability to address a great variety of problems using the tools of differential and integral calculus with functions of one real variable.

Planned learning outcomes, teaching methods and assessment methods and criteria
The presentation of much of the material is preceded, if possible, by the discussion of one application or by the geometrical interpretation of the topic.
The students are invited to actively participate in the class. The presentation of many examples and counter-examples illustrates the main ideas involved. Whenever possible, applications to the resolution of problems in other fields of knowledge, like physics and geometry, are discussed.
In the tutorial classes, students are invited to analyze and solve problems involving the concepts presented in the lectures.
1st stage evaluation: 4 short tests during classes, the average of the top 3 will supply 40% of the final mark and a final 3 hours written test weighting 60%.
2nd stage evaluation: 3 hour written test.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit’s objectives
The methodology calls for a continuous and active participation of the student. The aim is that the student develops new skills on using the tools of calculus to approach specific problems. The systematic presentation of examples and counterexamples allows a deeper understanding of the subjects and the development of critical judgment. In the tutorial classes the students are continuously involved in the discussion of specific problems. This promotes the problem solving skills. Moreover it helps the teacher to have a better understanding of the students’ difficulties allowing him/her to better adapt the class contents to the difficulties of the students.
