– A capacidade de análise e síntese;
– A capacidade de organização e planeamento;
– A capacidade para resolver problemas e tomar decisões;
– A capacidade de trabalhar em equipa;
– A capacidade para aplicar na prática conhecimento adquirido;
– A capacidade para gerar novas ideias;

– Preparação e pré-processamento de dados;
– Desenvolver, comentar e avaliar modelos descritivos;
– Desenvolver, comentar e avaliar modelos preditivos.

Learning outcomes of the curricular unit
The course aims to stimulate the student:
– The ability of analysis and synthesis;
– The ability of organization and planning;
– The ability to solve problems and make decisions;
– The ability to work in a team;
– The ability to put in practice the theoretical knowledge acquired;
– The ability to develop new ideas;

Regarding the technical component, at the end of the course, the student should be able to discuss the principal topics and concepts associated with Data Mining such as:
  – Data preparation and pre-processing;
  – Develop, review and evaluate descriptive models;
  – Develop, review and evaluate predictive models.

1. Introdução ao Data Mining
2. Preparação e exploração de dados
3. Modelos Descritivos
4. Modelos Preditivos

Syllabus
The Syllabus is composed by four main sections:

1. Introduction to Data Mining
2. Data Preparation and Exploration
3. Descriptive Models
4. Predictive Models

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the Curricular Unit’s objectives
The discipline of data mining has as main objective to give the student the capabilities to turn data into knowledge.

The data mining tools are intended to identify behaviours and future trends, supporting the process of proactive and knowledge based decision. They are also used to answer business questions which traditionally were unanswerable due to the computational complexity.

Metodologias de ensino (avaliação incluída)
A avaliação é constituída por:
1) 25% da Classificação Final: Case Study para Modelos Descritivos;
2) 25% da Classificação Final: Case Study para Modelos Preditivos;

Planned learning outcomes, teaching methods and assessment methods and criteria
The final evaluation is composed by:
1) 25% of final grade: Case Study for Descriptive Models;
2) 25% of final grade: Case Study for Predictive models;
3) 50% of final grade: Theoretical Examination

Important Notes:
– Mandatory Minimum score of 8 in each component.
– The three components of evaluation are mandatory, regardless of the period when the examination is made.
– The case study groups can be from 2 to 3 members.
– After the delivery of the case study, a 15 minutes power point presentation will be done.
– In the first 15 minutes of the theoretical lecture the students will need to sign an attendance register. Students attending at least 70% of the theoretical classes will have a bonus of 0.5 values in the final grade.

Demonstration of the teaching methodologies coherence with the curricular unit’s objectives
In this course, the main methodological aspects of “Data Mining” and the most important tools used will be presented.
The aim is also to provide students the opportunity to develop skills in the use of SAS Enterprise Miner SAS Institute software.

The practical component is one of the fundamental aspects of the discipline, so the ability to translate knowledge into practical actions and decision analysis is particularly valued.
